background: MaiaBee grew up in Monterey Park…
The Borderlands of, “That’s not East LA, that’s Monterey Park!” / “That’s not Monterey Park, that’s East LA!”
Maia’s family has lived in Los Angeles since the late 1800’s, from Kohler Street in DTLA to Boyle Heights to East Los to MPK.
Maia is a 5th generation American of Mexican, Rarámuri, Nahua, Comanche, Spanish, & Portuguese descent — & daydreams of taking their blue Subie “Ozzmosis” down a long, winding lineage road trip from Los Angeles through Northwest Mexico to El Paso to Chihuahua to San Luis Potosí to Guanajuato to Michoacán to Tenochtitlan & Chiapas.
they graduated from Bennington College (Vermont) in 2015, Bachelor of Arts: Identities in Performance — combining courses in History & Public Action with Acting, Directing, & Playwriting.
while in college, they co-founded the QTBIPOC student collective, Kalopsia: Check All That Apply — headed by Rook Jagai — organized around equity & inclusion advocacy.
they wrote “Remembrance” (short tragicomedy on loss, love & longing) for the 24-Hour Plays Bennington alumni fundraiser (January 2019) at The Lucille Lortel Theatre (NYC) — directed by alumni David Drake ‘88 & costumed designed by Michael Robinson ‘87 — & have since rejoined the 24-Hour Plays as a writer and actor both online and in-person throughout the years.
Maia was a company member of Mosaic Lizard Theater (Alhambra) from 2007 to 2018 until its closing. led by the hilarious and thoughtful director, playwright, actor (and now novelist) Jay Cameron Parker - Maia was blessed with so many fun opportunities (from farce to parody to murder mystery and dramedy) to gain the comedy chops they have to this day.
Maia spent winter 2014-2015 in Chicago, interning under the coaching of Matt Barbera with The Playground Theater, where they had incredible life-changing opportunities, such as: Improv classes focused on “The Joy of Failure”; working as crew (for director Jesse Swanson) & thus attending Sketchfest 2015 at Stage 773, seeing as many wild, fun sketches as they could in two weekends; exploring all comedy and theatre Chicago had to offer, including The Second City, Improv Olympic, and The Hypocrites; and being gifted vegan lemon bars on their 22nd birthday by the original chef & founder of Kitchen17.
This special time in their life culminated in the first show they ever put on: The BAE WATCH Variety Show — co-produced, co-hosted, and co-written with dear friend & hilarious actor/writer Ashley Keenan.
